Happy September! I absolutely LOVE September. It is my favorite month of the year. I woke up today with a new joy in my heart knowing it was the first day of this spectacular month. To me, September always brings new beginnings, old comforts, and God’s greatness to life!
First, let’s discuss new beginnings. This one isn’t too hard to figure out—school starts again! Every year as a child, I looked forward to the start of the school year. (I know, I was one of THOSE kids!) The anticipation of finding out which friends were in your classes, which teachers you would have, purchasing new school supplies, sneakers, and the 1st day of school outfit, was always so exciting for me! I could not wait for the first day to arrive. I would head to the bus stop and ponder all the new experiences that were in store for me. I am certain this is why I majored in Elementary Education in college. Being a teacher was a way to continue experiencing the good feelings from my childhood. Now, my own kids are finally headed back to school this week. I can’t wait to hear how their first day goes and all about all the new experiences they’ve had.

Next, can we talk about old comforts? By old comforts, I mean items and activities that you have experienced in the past but are specific or extra special to this time of year. September and autumn bring with them cooler temperatures. It is a time to add more layers of clothing and I can honestly say there are few things I love more than wearing jeans and a sweatshirt. To me, cuddling up in front of the fireplace in some snuggly clothes is one of the best feelings on earth. Another comfort of fall is getting together with friends to watch football. Tailgating, having lots of laughs, and enjoying the day outside in the crisp fall air cannot be beaten. (Hopefully this year we will get at least a couple of games to watch.) Other comforts of fall are the foods. Soups, stews, chili, apples, pumpkins, and more. The scent that fills the air from long-simmering pots on the stove or roasting pans in the oven gives such warmth to a home. I have a few recipes that I make every single fall that are truly comfort food. Here is a favorite that I look forward to making each year. This recipe comes from my friend Brenda, who has a niche for finding scrumptious recipes, and she also happens to be an excellent cook. Her recipe is well-loved by many and SO SIMPLE to make, you must try it!
Sherried Beef
2lbs beef stew meat
2 can Golden Mushroom Soup
1 cup sherry
1 package of Lipton Onion Soup Mix
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Stir all ingredients together and place in a roaster or covered casserole dish. Bake for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Serve over rice or egg noodles.
That is it! Very few ingredients, minimal effort, and super delicious! (We personally like it with egg noodles.) You are welcome! 🙂
Finally, September brings forth the glory of God! All one has to do is look around outside in the fall. When the leaves change to glorious colors and the fields turn to a golden yellow, God’s majesty is on full display for all to see. Is it not remarkable how each tree produces a different leaf, with a different color, that soon falls from the tree and makes way for winter’s fury? The smell that fills the air, the apples to be picked, the pumpkins to take home and carve, are all part of God’s amazing creation. Each of these things makes me so grateful for Him and in such awe of all that He has given us. It renews my spirit as I marvel at the abundance of beauty surrounding me. Thank you God for it all! You are most definitely a loving and creative God!
